A Golden Wedding Anniversary Surprise....Brisbane Family Photography/Brisbane Family Photographer

Joe & Judy celebrated 50 years marriage on 10th July 2015

Joe & Judy celebrated 50 years marriage on 10th July 2015

A couple of weeks of ago I had the pleasure of  photographing a family photo session.  I was told it was a surprise for my client's parents who would be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary and they wanted to have all their family with them to help her parent's celebrate it.  It was also possibly the last opportunity to have all their family together in one place.  So this photo session was a little extra special.

The occasion itself went off without a hitch.  Their celebration was organised by a special friend of mine, who also happens to be my aunt and it was held at her place.  Joe and Judy were told it was going to be a BBQ with friends and thought nothing more of it.

Joe and Judy's family were waiting for them, and it was indeed a big surprise for them both. Family from Canada were also live-streamed so they could share their special occasion with their loved ones back home.

Joe requested this particular photo of their wedding rings.

These family photos were part of Joe and Judy's gift to celebrate not only their Golden Wedding Anniversary, but also to celebrate life and their family.   Every member made a special effort to look their best and also to just enjoy, and give their love and support and make this occasion one to be remembered.  Especially for Joe.

But I've included a few select images to give you an idea and wet your appetite just a little. Enjoy! :)

Sirromet Winery Family Photos...Teasers.../Brisbane Family Photography/Brisbane Portrait Photography

The Egeskov Family...portrait in the Barrell Room

The Egeskov Family...portrait in the Barrell Room

Shane and Kate hadn't had family photos for some time and their boys Mitchell, Benjamin and Jarrod (youngest to oldest), had grown considerably.  So they asked me to photograph some fresh, updated family photos to add to the older ones hanging on their walls.

Sirromet Winery in Carbrook is a beautiful location for photos, though most would know this location as one for weddings.  But for Shane and Kate, who had always wanted some photos at Sirromets, and in particular, the Barrell Room, it was the perfect location for their updated family photos.

The only thing which probably didn't materialise were the vines in the vineyard.  I'm sure they, as did I, had romantic visions of a vineyard filled with beautiful, green, vines twisted around the those long wired trellises and dangling big bunches of grapes.  But that was not to be. However, the family could still enjoy the beauty and tranquility, and stroll along the vineyard. And of course, the boys could still run!

Due to our limited time within the ballroom and winery, and some technical difficulties with one of my flashes, I must admit I was a little concerned about fitting in all the images we had talked about between the Barrell Room and the vineyard.  But the family just went with the flow and the carefree, easygoing attitude of Shane and Kate and the family's willingness to enjoy the experience made it so much easier for me.

I've often had to remind myself and know from experience that photo shoots always go so much more smoothly and are more enjoyable for everyone if you keep things simple.  Choose a few key photos or scenarios that you would like, but don't plan anything too much beyond that.  The best images come when you have the time to let people relax (as well as the photographer) and just enjoy the moment, and allow those photographic moments to flow naturally.

Just as in the three photos in the series below, that was one time I definitely had to go with the flow. Unbeknownst to me, the family decided to throw in a curveball of their own when they all ran toward me at full speed.  It was a job to click the shutter fast enough to catch them!  But it's times like these that I really enjoy when clients decide to thrown in a few 'unexpected surprises'.  It shows how much they're getting into the spirit of the experience and the Egeskovs are a family that like to have a little fun and goof off together.

And you know, at the end of the day when it comes to family photos, the most important shot of the day...that photo that you want hanging up on the wall,  is usually the one of all of you together that defines who you are as a family.  The rest is just cream on the top!

Rain Clouds Can Yield Unexpected Results...Gold Coast Outdoor Portrait Photography/Brisbane Outdoor Portrait Photography

Southport Dog Beach during the early afternoon

Rain clouds over a setting sun can yield spectacular colours and stir your emotions

A lovely stranger who allowed me to photograph her

The last couple of days I've popped down to Southport to check out the light in the early and late afternoon as I have a family photo shoot coming up.  It's amazing the difference that a couple of hours can make to the light and mood, close to sunrise or sunset.

Rain clouds can also dramatically change the scenery and the mood because of the way they change the colour of the sky.  Clouds also work like filters to diffuse and soften the light which works a treat for portrait photography.  So if you've ever wondered why portrait photographers who shoot outdoors prefer the late afternoon, this is why.  The light is more flattering to your features and makes your skin appear softer and smoother which makes for beautiful, unforgettable photos!

The first image was taken at around 2pm in the afternoon when the sun was brighter and harsher.  Great for tourism shots where you want to show beautiful, crisp colours of the sky, ocean and sand.  The remaining images were taken before sunset and as the sun was going down.  Notice how the deep, rich colours change the whole feel?  So much more emotive.

I really enjoyed taking these shots.  Especially yesterday late afternoon.  It's been some time since I've been able to take some landscape/seascape images and I thoroughly soaked up this gorgeous sunset!

Now I'm really looking forward to this family photo shoot and seeing what beautiful images can be created. That's what I love about shooting outdoors.  You never get the same photo twice, even at the same location. Because when you bring together all the different elements and the changing colours from of a setting sun, whether it's a clear or cloudy sunset, the result will always be different.

So when you have photos taken outdoors, even though weather can be sometimes unpredictable, rest assured that your photos will never look the same as anyone else's and you're guaranteed individual and truly unique photos.

What are your favourite spaces outdoors and where would you love to have your photos taken...beach, forest, field?  So many options to create unique and stunning results.  Your options are limited only by your imagination.  But if you're stuck for ideas, I can help you with that.  Give me a call or send me an email to start working on creating your own unique and beautiful portraits!

Romance Amongst the Cane Fields...Brisbane Couple Photography/Brisbane Portrait Photography

"Once in awhile right in the middle of an ordinary life....Love gives us a Fairytale."

- Author unknown

Last weekend saw out a beautiful vintage styled shoot with a beautiful young couple, Josh and Dani. From the outset they were excited and eager to try a vintage styled session and really dived into it with enthusiasm.

This shoot happened to be quite serendipitous when I think of all the stars that aligned to make this happen.  One was the fact that when I chose the location before our pre-session consultation, I didn't realise the connection between Josh and sugar cane fields, where he grew up.  The photo session brought back many wonderful memories, and after the shoot they mentioned how on the drive out and along the cane fields was spent reminiscing.

How I came across 'Baisy',  the Morris Minor used in the shoot is also interesting and I've made a wonderful new friend of her owner, Tamika.  And of course, the weather and sunset was spectacular and the whole session, especially as the sun dropped had such a magical feel and quality.

So tonight I bring to you some 'teasers' for not only your viewing pleasure, but of course for Josh and Dani. It was so hard to decide which ones to post!  I hope you enjoy them!
