Oh Love! Young Love! ...Brisbane Couple Photography/Gold Coast Couple Photography

Brisbane Couple Photography_Swansson

"Oh Love! Young Love!, bound in thy rosy band,

Let sage or cynic prattle as he will,

these hours and only these, redeem life's years of ill."

- Lord Byron

Gosh I love being behind the camera!  It's such a privilege to witness people in all their beauty, and splendour.  And so it is with being able to capture the young, teenage love of Dylan and Rhianne.

It's the stuff that classic romance novels go crazy over!

It's so invigorating and rejuvenating to see how these two young musicians and friends truly embracing and supporting each other's journey,  starting out in life.  I can see how they must have grown together and with it their budding love and confidence.

It was my absolute pleasure to photograph Dylan and Rhianne just being themselves, being in the present and soaking up the last hours of the day, totally captivated by each other.

After an unpredictable start to the session with showers and storm clouds coming over at the first location, the sky eventually broke open, leaving heavy, bruised clouds on the horizon, with a deep pink-purple sky looming above.  A perfect end to this beautiful couple session.

Thanks to Dylan and Rhianne for completely being in the moment, relaxing and trusting.  I can't wait to share the rest of your images soon.... ;)

Oh Love!  Young Love!

I'm a Biographer: So Tell Me - What is Your Story?.../Family Documentary Photography/Gold Coast Documentary Family Photography

Family Documentary Photography

Biographer (bi.og.ra.pher): A person who writes an account of someone's life.

- Oxford Dicitionary

That's me...a Biographer.  Yes, I'm a photographer, but I'm much more than that. What drives me is to write an account of you...your life...who you are.

I don't just want to show you a pretty picture, though it must be appealing to the eye and there must be beauty in it.  There are many forms of beauty, and I mean to capture them all.

Beauty is found in deep sorrow and heights of happiness.  It is found in grand places and in the lowly ones too.  It is found in each one of us in different and unique ways. Beauty is life and the unique web you weave is what truly inspires me.

Tell me who you really are and I'll show you something that maybe you haven't seen before, or had forgotten had existed.

A photo memory of a father as a boy...

A photo memory of a father as a boy...

and a living memory of his son.

and a living memory of his son.

I want to know...what makes you smile?  What makes your heart sing?  What makes you cry? And what makes you feel something stir deep inside?  And I want to know why.

All those little things that have brought you to this moment.  They become the big things.  But we don't often realise this until our defining moments, when life takes a turn...when life changes or takes a different direction and forces us to look inward.

This is how it was for Paula and Damon and their family, whose photos you see in this post.  Realising that their lives would change and they would be moving on, Paula and Damon wanted to have a momento of this stage of their family life.  A witness of accounts of sorts to remind them of this beautiful time in their lives.

Their children are teenagers and Paula could see how their relationship with their children would inevitably change, especially as young boys and girls become young men and women. That growing awareness that soon the closeness...the bond between parents and young children would somehow be different, and they wanted to hold onto that and to savour it for what it meant right now.

By spending one night and one full day documenting their lives...A Day-in-the-Life of the Kloots, I was gifted with the privilege of insight into who the Kloots family are.  Not just as a family, but as individuals.  And I have been truly humbled that this beautiful family allowed me to share their lives and open themselves up to me, in order that I may accurately record who they are and who they were at this point in their lives.

And when asked to give one quote, saying or words that described who the Kloots family were, this is what they said...

"As different as we all are from each other, we were made to be together."

So my gift to you  as your biographer,  is to reflect back to you those little things that often go unnoticed. Those visceral feelings that all of us have,  but maybe we just need encouragement and a little courage to acknowledge.  Or those little things that while living and rushing around we have little time to stop and savour.

And my job is done when I can help you to preserve and cement those things in a way that becomes a living reminder of who we are now and who we were:  as individuals...as a family...as friends...as groups of like-minded people,  and as a community.

My desire is to help you remember, appreciate and savour all that you are and have been, in the kaleidoscope which is your life.  This sweet, crazy, maddening life.

A Golden Wedding Anniversary Surprise....Brisbane Family Photography/Brisbane Family Photographer

Joe & Judy celebrated 50 years marriage on 10th July 2015

Joe & Judy celebrated 50 years marriage on 10th July 2015

A couple of weeks of ago I had the pleasure of  photographing a family photo session.  I was told it was a surprise for my client's parents who would be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary and they wanted to have all their family with them to help her parent's celebrate it.  It was also possibly the last opportunity to have all their family together in one place.  So this photo session was a little extra special.

The occasion itself went off without a hitch.  Their celebration was organised by a special friend of mine, who also happens to be my aunt and it was held at her place.  Joe and Judy were told it was going to be a BBQ with friends and thought nothing more of it.

Joe and Judy's family were waiting for them, and it was indeed a big surprise for them both. Family from Canada were also live-streamed so they could share their special occasion with their loved ones back home.

Joe requested this particular photo of their wedding rings.

These family photos were part of Joe and Judy's gift to celebrate not only their Golden Wedding Anniversary, but also to celebrate life and their family.   Every member made a special effort to look their best and also to just enjoy, and give their love and support and make this occasion one to be remembered.  Especially for Joe.

But I've included a few select images to give you an idea and wet your appetite just a little. Enjoy! :)

Documenting Your Photo Session Experience...Gold Coast Documentary Family Photography/Documentary Family Photography

Gold Coast Documentary Family Photography

When you look at above photos, do you get an idea of the Heng Family's experience during their family photo session?  And how do you think they felt about their family session going by these photos?

You see, having family photo sessions is different for everyone.  For some like the Heng family, their experience of their Australian holiday was important to them, not just necessarily just having traditional family photos.

You see, coming from Singapore they said they could have family photos taken anytime.  But what made this documentary family photography session special for them was that they wanted to document their uniquely 'Australian' experience as a family of three generations. They wanted their Australian holiday memories to take back with them.  Your sessions don't have to be documentary style.  The principle works just as well for more formal sessions and events like weddings.

So if you want to remember your experience in a way that separates it from any other...then documenting different elements creates specific memories that help link back to that experience.

In the instance of the Heng family, the elements of the  beautiful Australian landscapes (gum trees) and brilliant sun and blue skies, are things which were documented in pictures and are things that they have come to known as being uniquely Australian.  And of course, how they chose to experience their photo session by way of their relaxed approach and how they interacted as a family all added to the varying elements to give context to their Australian family holiday and the meaning it holds for them.

So how do you preserve those memories once you have had your session, including all the elements that made up your experience?

Simple...create a collage of prints and/or frames like the one above and hang them on your wall/s.  Wall collages can be made up of any number of prints and sizes and can be done to suit the space you have ,whether small or spacious.   And by displaying specific images that have meaning and bringing them all together  and arranging them in a certain way,  they create your story of that experience.  And how about online slideshows and family photo books?  These are some other great ways to document your experience!

It's simple really if you can see the possibilities!

* P.S.  Below are some other collage ideas for you....

The Friday night of the Day-in-the-Life session of the Kloots family...

With formal events, try choosing elements from one part of your event.  Like these photos which centre around this part of the day, and which are grouped together to show different perspectives based around the location of this beautiful little bridge.

Engagement Sessions - A Family Affair...Brisbane Engagement Photography/Gold Coast Engagement Photography

Brisbane-Engagement-Photography_Nada_BW-92.jpg

Not all engagement photo sessions have to be highly romantic and in romantic locations. Often, engagements are something that couples want to share with their family and close friends and save the romance and formalities for their wedding day. And so it was with Jason and Nada (you might remember some of their silly, playful shots recently).

Being a very casual and relaxed occasion, it was decided that a more candid approach would be better suited to Jason and Nada's engagement shoot.  So we leaned toward my two hour Documentary package, which incorporates relaxed portraits as well as candid, documentary style photography to capture the interactions of family and friends, as they unfolded.

So this engagement session we mixed it up with some varied shots of Jason and Nada, followed by some very relaxed family portraits and then finishing off with a myriad of photos of family and friends enjoying a catered dinner and each other's company.

And what a lovely, relaxed and friendly bunch of people!  Most guests were happy to have a few snaps and a chat and to ensure that Jason and Nada's occasion was enjoyed by all.
