What is Documentary Family Photography?

Documentary (style) photography is about sharing moments as they are lived…naturally, spontaneously, relaxed and without posing or staging.

It’s about focusing on the small things which upon reflection become the big things and the most profound.  It’s what makes you and your loved ones uniquely you.  Just think - your photos will never be the same as any other person or family.  And besides, wouldn't you rather remember or be remembered  for that individual chemistry and synergy between you and your loved ones that make you and your loved ones uniquely you?

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

Ask yourself honestly…what’s more important?   That you look perfect and polished, or you being authentically you ? Embracing who you and your loved ones are, where you are right now at this time in your life, and all the wonderful flaws coming straight from the heart, giving your photos feeling and soul.  Because I strongly believe that it is our imperfections that are the most profoundly beautiful.

How does a 1-2 hour Documentary session work?

First up, a short period of time will be allocated for relaxed portrait shots.  If you’re a family, I’ve found that mums and relatives usually like at least one or two photos with the entire family in it that are nice enough to create a photo that can be displayed and hung on the wall.  But remember – no make-up artist or staged set-up is required!

Then the remainder of the time will be to completely unwind, interact, play and just have fun!  This is where those special little things are captured when you’re completely relaxed…individual expressions…moments.  Quirky little things that you’ve come to know and love, but have never been able to document.

How does a 'Day-in-the-Life' family session work?

Day-in-the-Life sessions are different to a 1-2hr session, due to the fact that an entire day in the life of your family has the capacity to reveal more about you and differing facets of your life.  There is much more opportunity to create a story built around your family interactions to reveal family bonds and connections that you take for granted every day that you don’t see, throughout the day and in differing scenarios and locations.

Day-in-the-Life sessions can bring clarity and insight to family members.   Through the unique process I employ, I have found that there is the added benefit of strengthening familial love, appreciation and understanding of other family members who experience a Day-in-the-Life session.

As with shorter family sessions, Day-in-the-Life family sessions allow  those special little things to be captured when you’re completely relaxed…individual expressions…moments, but even more so.  Quirky little things that you’ve come to know and love, but have never been able to document.  These sessions allow more of a connection, allowing us to create a stronger, more powerfully personal visual diary of your lives at any given point in time.
